once upon a time there was a band called MOXIE...
Some time in 1996 my friend Farrell and I started a band called
Moxie. At the time I didnt actually play an instrument, but I still thought
it was a good idea, and Farrell was a wonderful songwriter and guitar
player as well as my best friend. We had been friends since childhood and had spent a lot of time making up songs together.
To solve the problem of my not playing an instrument
while in this newly formed band, I went to the music
store to find something to play. A big red bass guitar
grabbed my attention and with the last $200.00 that I had,
I bought it.
Soon after we asked a friend to join us on bongos,
then another on second guitar and we hammered away
at composing many of Farrell's songs as well as some
of my own.
In just a few months time we had a gig. Albeit it was in
a crummy little beachbar in Bayville, LI and the
patrons were so drunk that they could barely tell that we were there.
But this was fine for us and we played our gig. As the owner paid us our $100.00
he added "I dunno why I pay your girls." Yes, we were awful.
We went on to play many more gigs. We replaced our bongo player with a new
drummer, prodigy child Lindsey. We met a wonderful Welsh girl named Katy
who was in the states working as a nanny and made her our back up singer
and percussionist.
Then along came Luke, a batty producer working as a teacher
at 5 Towns Music college. He heard something he liked in Moxie
and he hauled us into the studio to record what would become
our first release called
"the floor."

(The Floor, released April 1998, 28 Days Records.
Produced by Luke Delalio and Moxie at 5 Towns College, and Water Music.)
Thinking that I was sure to be a rock-star I quickly got myself a job at a
record label so that I could learn more about the business of music. We
started our very own record label called 28 Days Records (which is now being run by our previous manager Nancy) and I secured
distribution from Polygram. Our first CD came out nationally in 1998.
Until Spring of 2001, Moxie toured, got loads of press, played hundreds of
shows around the east coast, recorded a second CD, was part of a
documentary on female rock musicians, made a video....

Our songs even made their way to teen drama, Dawson's Creek. Not bad for a
little band that sprouted out of boredom and friendship!
Dawson's Creek
Sadly, in the Spring of 2001 we decided to call it quits. Pressure from the
lifestyle and need for individual creative growth was mounting and we chose
to put the project down.
Moxie was great fun, a lot of learning and I remain grateful to my old
band, our friends and community and all the people who helped us along the
way. Thanks for letting me be a rock-star, well sort of.
